This video was taken in July 2022 showing traffic congestion and diversions onto side streets when a section of 11th street is reduced to one lane in each direction.

4 lanes were restored after Road Diet reversal because citizens spoke out and council members listened. Ambulances were stuck in gridlock and businesses were losing money. Loss of parking spots and safety concerns were other problems.
Four speakers make the case against the 11th Street road diet. See video of the Houston City Council meeting when MAYOR put project on hold for 30 days. Go to 1:48:00 through 2:16:00 (28 minutes total).

Will W 11th Street near Shepherd be a safer street?
Mayor Turner put a 30 day pause to the Road on May 3, 2022
Wall St. Journal Article dated 1/18/2019
A story about the Khoury family who lives in Los Angeles five blocks from a fire station. When Renee Khoury’s mom fell, it took an emergency vehicle 10 minutes to get to them. They could hear the siren and knew help was near, but help couldn’t reach them.
Road Diet Failures-3 (docx)
DownloadThe City of Houston needs to craft a procedure that will allow property owners and other primary stakeholders, such as churches and businesses, in corridors unhappy with a proposed or implemented road diet to cancel a project or reverse it.
This is clearly what the 11th Street resistance needs now as construction draws to a close.
"I'm a local Mom, driver, commuter, & occasional biker. It makes zero sense to me. I don't want my teenage kids riding in those lanes & have warned them about driving there as well. I'm all for slowing traffic & making streets safer for all, but these changes are so absurd. The bus Island @ Heights Blvd/11th is the perfect example." Allison Hartley - Houston Heights
"It was an alleged ‘raceway’. 19 years driving down this road and I’ve never felt anyone was racing or driving in any absurd speed. I’ve never seen a wreck or anyone pulled over for a ticket either. This was simply a desire by our horrible officials to make our city appear more ‘green’. Look what they are doing to Shepherd and the streets downtown. It’s ridiculous! They are limiting the flow of traffic yet allowing huge increases of people, via these high rises, into the inner city. This just causes more congestion and frustration among the people." posted on NextDoor
"And now 10th St has lots of cars flying down. Thanks!!" Dave Saba posted on NextDoor
"As a cyclist I don't even like this. There is already too much traffic on 11th. This just pushes more traffic onto quieter streets that I would rather ride on. Whoever pushed this through had their head firmly planted ..........." posted on NextDoor
"Congrats to whomever got paid off to implement this absurdity in the name of slowing traffic to a HALT in a "growing" city neighborhood. Taking 100 cars spread out across 4 lanes down to 2 lanes will absolutely slow traffic to a grinding halt. Bravo, the plan to slow traffic, create road rage and stress, drive traffic into 30MPH side streets and give the bicyclists a dangerous place to ride is complete. " Tonya D on NextDoor

Carmen Wieting • West Houston Heights Sitting on my porch this morning on W12th street, I counted two very large delivery trucks in a five minute period and one was a Sysco truck probably delivering food to the restaurants on 11th street. This is not counting the very large increase of cars on my street now. If you think that the lanes are a standard size for large trucks to maneuver up and down, then come to my street and see the totally new auto show that started about a month ago and pretty sure that my street is wider than 10th street between the concrete barriers and bike lanes now. Love the idea of the bike lanes but hate that darn concrete shoulder by the bike lane.
